Preparation of Hydrogen Gas in Laboratory — Dynamic Simulation

Principle: Hydrogen gas is prepared by reacting a metal (Zinc) with a dilute acid (HCl or H₂SO₄).

Chemical Equations & Reactions

With Hydrochloric Acid:

\[ Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) \rightarrow ZnCl_2(aq) + H_2(g) \uparrow \]

With Sulphuric Acid:

\[ Zn(s) + H_2SO_4(aq) \rightarrow ZnSO_4(aq) + H_2(g) \uparrow \ ]

Test for Hydrogen
Bring a burning splint near the mouth of the jar. Hydrogen burns with a 'pop' sound.

Observation

• Vigorous bubbling seen in flask.

• Water displaced downwards in jar.

• Jar becomes transparent as gas fills.
